Shell has unveiled the world's first electric ferry at its Singapore plant and has pledged to work with the city-state's port authorities to reduce emissions from ships.
The move marks an important path towards the Singapore Port Authority's rule that new port ships operating in their waters must be electric or run on zero fuel or biofuel from 2030.
The Panama Canal places limits on the draft of the largest ships, due to falling water levels in nearby lakes that are an integral part of the waterway, the canal said.
The restrictions, which will come into force, mean that container ships will have to maintain a depth of about 47.5 feet, instead of the previous 50 feet, which will entail a decrease in the volume of goods transported.
This is the fifth drought-related adjustment since the beginning of this year.
