Panama Canal lowers maximum depth limit for ships due to drought
The Panama Canal places limits on the draft of the largest ships, due to falling water levels in nearby lakes that are an integral part of the waterway, the canal said.
The restrictions, which will come into force, mean that container ships will have to maintain a depth of about 47.5 feet, instead of the previous 50 feet, which will entail a decrease in the volume of goods transported.
This is the fifth drought-related adjustment since the beginning of this year.
